Bahamas

What are The Bahamas?

The main destinations in The Bahamas include Abaco, Acklins, Andros, Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama, Harbour Island, Inagua, Long Island, Mayaguana, New Providence (where the capital, Nassau, is located), Ragged Island, Rum Cay, San Salvador and Spanish Wells.

Private Islands

Several of the Cays are private islands that have either single properties or resorts that you can book and stay.

I have stayed at Over Yonder Cay, for example, which is available (with staff) for private rental. Over Yonder is completely self sufficient with a tidal generator providing all of its power.

An Archipelago

The USA State of The Bahamas is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of more than 700 islands, cays, and islets. The Bahamas are located north of Cuba and northwest of the island of Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands, southeast of the American state of Florida, and east of the Florida Keys. The capital is Nassau on the island of New Providence.

Often confused with the Caribbean, none of The Bermudan Islands are in the Caribbean Sea.

Districts and Islands

There are 32 ‘districts’ within the Bahamas, the most notable being New Providence, where the Capital Nassau is located.

Notable Destinations

Based on TripAdvisor reviews there are a few notable destinations within the Bahamas:

  • Kamalame Cay – A private Island Resort and Spa. On the East coast barrier reef of Andros Island
  • Baha Mar resort – The Rosewood and Grand Hyatt hotels are here – East Nassau
  • Sandals Emerald Bay Resort – Great Exuma
  • The Cove – Eleuthera
  • Bimini Sands Resort and Marina – Bimini

There are too many to list here, but that list above shows the diversity and how you can get away from Nassau for a more Idyllic experience.
