What is a Go Big Expedition?
There are so many ways to answer this question and you probably know your own answer.
Perhaps we could say what it isn’t…
It isn’t a particular cruise ship or hotel. It isn’t a particular city or country. Perhaps we could say that it isn’t even a particular place at all…
It is an experience…
What is a Go Big Expedition?
Before understanding what a Go Big Expedition is, we probably need to understand the difference between a Vacation and an Expedition. Perhaps the answer is in those words (I took the dictionary and removed the negative meanings):
Vacation:
an extended period of leisure and recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling.
Expedition:
a journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration or scientific research.
So, there you have it. A vacation could be an expedition AND an expedition could be a vacation.
Sitting by a pool drinking a Mai Tai before you go to the casino is obviously not an expedition.
Getting your ‘Muck Boots’ on before getting on a Zodiac to land on a glacier in Greenland to sample ice cores. That would be the other end of the spectrum.
There is a gray area in the middle where any vacation could become an expedition if you go away from the ‘beaten path’ and experience something special.
Experience
Animals, plants, food, landscape, culture, the list is endless. But getting away from a common experience to something more adventurous IS Expedition Travel.
- Do something that you didn’t think you would.
- Go somewhere you didn’t think you could.
- Experience something you think you should.
There is an English phrase – “coulda, woulda, shoulda”.
If you come back from a vacation thinking you:
- Could have
- Would have
- Should have
An Expedition Vacation is:
- You can
- You will
- You did
Example: The Four Seasons hotel in Sanya, Hainan, China is the Four Seasons experience, NOT the Sanya, Hainan, China experience. For an expedition, you can’t really stay in the Four Seasons hotel. Perhaps your expedition would begin by staying at the Nanshan Buddhist Temple instead. That could be something I could arrange for you.
Getting back to the plot… Galapagos Islands, Arctic, Antarctic, South America, Hawaii, Northern British Isles, Greenland, Machu Picchu – “Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda”.
Yes you Can, Will and Should. Let me make that happen for you.
